How to Buy Gold Bars in the UAE: 5 Things to Check Before You Pay

A 10 g bar of 24K gold held about AED 4,930 worth of metal on Thursday, October 22, 2026, based on the morning rate of AED 493.00 a gram in the UAE gold table carried by Khaleej Times (the previous day’s figure was AED 497.25). No seller will hand you that bar for exactly that sum, and the size of the gap is where careful buyers save money.

UAE residents usually buy bars in one of three places: a counter at the Gold Souk in Deira or a mall jeweller, a bank branch, or an online dealer that delivers to the door. Some overseas sellers now list the UAE as a delivery country. Bitgolder’s gold bars, for example, come from LBMA Good Delivery refiners such as PAMP Suisse, Valcambi and Argor-Heraeus with a certificate of authenticity, and the company’s shipping page, checked on October 22, quotes 3 to 7 business days to the UAE, fully insured, tracked and signed for on delivery.

Wherever you buy, the same five checks apply before any money changes hands.

1. Read the bar, not just the label on the box

An investment bar tells you most of what you need on its face: the refiner’s name or logo, the weight, the fineness and a serial number. Fineness is written in parts per thousand, so 999.9 means 99.99 percent pure gold and 999 means 99.9 percent. Both count as 24K in shop language.

Small bars from major refiners usually come sealed in an assay card that repeats those details. Check that the serial number on the card matches the bar. If the card has been opened and resealed, walk away.

2. Check the refiner against a published list

The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) owns and manages the Good Delivery List, and only refiners whose bars LBMA has accredited for the global wholesale market appear on it. On October 22, 2026, the current gold list on lbma.org.uk named 67 refiners. LBMA also keeps a separate list of former refiners, so make sure the name you are checking sits on the current one.

A true Good Delivery gold bar weighs about 400 troy ounces, and LBMA’s FAQ says kilobars and smaller bars are not accepted in the London wholesale market. So a 50 g bar is not itself a “Good Delivery bar”. What you want is a small bar made by a listed refiner.

The UAE has its own framework too. DMCC, the Dubai free zone that handles much of the emirate’s gold trade, says Dubai accounts for 15 percent of worldwide gold trade, points to the UAE Good Delivery (UAEGD) standard for responsible sourcing, and notes that the Ministry of Economy regulates the sector at federal level. Hallmarking falls under Federal Law No. 11 of 2015.

3. Compare the bar premium with jewellery making charges

Jewellery and bars are priced differently. A necklace or bangle is usually priced as its weight multiplied by the day’s rate for its karat, plus a making charge for the craftsmanship, plus VAT. When you sell it later, buyers generally pay for the gold, not the work.

A bar has no making charge. Instead, the seller adds a premium over the gold value for refining, packaging and margin. Small bars carry a higher premium per gram, because the cost of making a 5 g bar is spread over very little metal.

The fair test is simple: divide the all-in price by the weight in grams and compare it with that morning’s 24K rate. Do the same sum at the souk, the bank and online, and the better deal shows up quickly.

4. Understand how VAT applies to investment gold

The UAE taxes jewellery and investment gold differently. Article 36 of the VAT Executive Regulation (Cabinet Decision No. 52 of 2017) says the supply or import of “investment precious metals” is zero-rated. It defines them as gold, silver and platinum with a purity of 99 percent or more, in a form tradeable in global bullion markets. That is the wording in the Federal Tax Authority’s consolidated version, issued on September 1, 2026 and posted on tax.gov.ae on September 10.

A 999.9 bar from a recognised refiner normally meets both tests. Jewellery generally does not: 22K gold is about 91.6 percent pure, and a bangle is not a bullion form, so it falls under the standard 5 percent rate. Check that your invoice shows the VAT treatment clearly.

This is a general summary, not tax advice. The regulation has been amended seven times since 2017, most recently by Cabinet Decision No. 149 of 2026, so rules can change. For anything beyond a routine purchase, read the current text on the FTA website or ask a registered tax agent.

5. Keep the paperwork and plan where the bar will live

Keep the tax invoice, which should show the seller’s details, the weight, the fineness and ideally the serial number, and leave the assay card sealed. A bar in its original card with a matching invoice is easier to sell later.

For online orders, read the delivery page first, note who handles customs clearance, and make sure someone is home to sign. Bitgolder, for instance, says import duty and taxes are already part of its checkout price for the countries it serves, but every dealer sets its own terms.

Then decide where the bar will live. A home safe bolted to a wall suits a few pieces, and a bank safe deposit box is another option. Larger holdings can go to a professional vault: the DMCC Vault in Almas Tower, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, is owned by DMCC, operated by Brink’s and offers insured storage to private clients as well as traders. If you keep gold at home, ask whether your contents cover includes bullion and up to what value.

The bottom line

Gold bars are one of the simpler things to buy in the UAE, because the metal price is public and the rules on investment gold are written down. What separates a good purchase from an expensive one is the detail: a bar from a listed refiner, a premium you have measured against the day’s rate, an invoice that matches the bar, and a safe place to keep it. Spend ten minutes on those checks and the souk, the bank and the online dealer become easy to compare.
