Why a 10-Gram Silver Ring Never Costs 10 Grams at the UAE Silver Rate
On the morning of 29 September 2026, two UAE rate pages disagreed about silver by almost AED 2 a gram. One, updated at 05:08 UTC, put 999 silver at AED 7.15. The other, last updated the day before, showed AED 9.11.
Neither figure is the price of a ring. The UAE silver rate — the chandi rate, if that’s what you search — is a reference for fine silver, 999 parts per thousand pure, quoted per gram, per tola (11.66 grams) or per kilo. Before you use one, check its timestamp, its purity and what kind of rate the page says it shows.
The Rate Is for 999. Your Ring Is 925.
Sterling silver is 92.5% silver, usually alloyed with copper so it’s hard enough to wear. A 10-gram sterling ring carries 9.25 grams of actual silver, which is why some rate pages list a separate 925 figure. Bikerringshop’s breakdown of the 925 stamp covers what that number does and doesn’t promise.

Here’s the arithmetic with a round AED 7 a gram for fine silver, close to the late-September spot quote:

The AED 65 is the metal inside the ring. It isn’t what the ring should sell for. And the rate moves fast: the LBMA silver benchmark set a record on 29 January 2026, and by late September spot silver traded at roughly half that level.
Where Does the Rest of the Price Go?
Making comes first. A jeweler may quote the making charge as its own line or fold it into one ticket price — the UAE’s Federal Tax Authority describes both setups in its VAT guidance on precious metals.
How much it matters depends on the piece. On a plain machine-made chain, metal is a big share of the price. On a heavy cast ring, the work is often the bigger part: someone sculpts the model, casts it, cuts off the sprue, files, polishes and darkens the recesses so the detail reads. Two rings of the same weight can sit far apart on price.

Weight still helps you compare like with like. Online sellers of sterling silver men’s jewelry often print each piece’s gram weight on the listing. You can run the metal math before you buy and see how much of the price is craft.
VAT comes last. A VAT-registered retailer generally charges 5% on a domestic sale of 925 jewelry. The zero rate for investment precious metals needs 99% purity or more and a form traded on global bullion markets, so a sterling ring doesn’t qualify.
Check the Castle Before You Pay by the Gram
Paying for grams only makes sense if the grams are silver. The UAE’s official hallmark has three parts: a purity mark, a metal symbol and the registered mark of the hallmarking body. The symbols are a falcon for gold, a palm tree for platinum and a castle for silver.
Under Federal Law No. 11 of 2015, processed precious-metal articles offered for sale need the official hallmark or an accepted foreign one, subject to the law’s exemptions. A piece with no room to stamp comes with an identification card. The 2018 executive regulations also class silver below 800 parts per thousand as low purity for trading.
A lone “925” stamp is a purity claim. On its own, it isn’t the full official hallmark.
Silver Rate Questions UAE Shoppers Ask
How much silver is in a 925 ring?
92.5% of its weight. The rest is alloy, usually copper. Multiply the silver weight by the day’s fine-silver rate for the metal value, then add making and VAT.
Can visitors get the VAT back on silver jewelry bought in the UAE?
Visitors can; residents can’t. The tourist refund scheme covers people 18 or over who entered on a tourist visa. Buy from a participating shop and validate the goods for export within 90 days, at departure. The FTA deducts 13% of the VAT plus AED 3.60 per transaction.
At the counter, ask for the ring’s weight, its fineness and the making charge, and look for the castle. With those on the receipt, the gap between the silver rate and the ticket is a number you can question.
